Keep passwords and private apps out of your clipboard history

A clipboard manager sees everything you copy, so the useful question is how to stop it seeing the things you would rather it did not. Clivra combines controls that are deterministic (nothing is saved from an ignored app) with safeguards that are heuristic (a guess that a string looks like a secret). Source-app detection itself can be imperfect, particularly for clipboard changes made by background processes. This guide separates the two so you can choose the right control. Pausing automatic capture still permits explicit Save Current Clipboard and file imports; it does not disable every manual action.

Where your clips live

The Mac app keeps its library and attachments in its own application data folder on your Mac; Settings has an Open library folder button that shows it. In version 1.2.5 iCloud sync and Dropbox sharing are not enabled, so your library is not uploaded by those integrations. Licence activation sends your licence key and a random installation identifier, never clip content. If you choose to fetch a rich link preview, Clivra requests the linked website; it does not fetch previews automatically. Opening a saved link also visits that site. Optional Apple Intelligence tools follow Apple’s system availability and privacy controls, so local library storage does not mean every action is offline.

Controls that always apply

Clipboard saving is off until you allow it. Onboarding offers Start saving my clipboard or Use without clipboard capture, and the same choice is the Allow automatic clipboard saving toggle in Settings. Pause automatic capture stops saving without losing anything, and Capture mode set to Manual saves only when you press Save Current Clipboard or its shortcut.

Ignored apps is a list of bundle identifiers; automatic clipboard clips identified as coming from those apps, or captured while one is frontmost, are excluded. Background copies can have imperfect source attribution; app exclusions are not a universal guarantee about every input path. Password managers such as 1Password and Bitwarden and Apple’s Keychain Access are on the list by default, and Add current app from running apps lets you add others. Clivra also skips anything while macOS secure input is active, and any clipboard item marked by the source app as concealed, transient or auto-generated, which some password managers use to protect copied content. Whether a particular app marks a copy this way depends on that app.

Saved types limits what automatic saving and the screenshot watcher accept. Clear Image, for example, to exclude images from automatic capture. Manual imports are a separate deliberate action and can still add images.

  1. Open Settings and choose Privacy.
  2. Review Ignored apps and add one bundle identifier per line, or use Add current app from running apps.
  3. Under Saved types, turn off any kind you never want captured automatically.
  4. Leave Skip likely passwords, keys and payment details on unless it blocks something you need.

A safeguard, not a guarantee

Skip likely passwords, keys and payment details looks for patterns: private-key blocks, lines such as password= or api_key:, well-known token prefixes, six-digit codes, and 13 to 19 digit sequences that pass the Luhn check used by payment cards. It is applied to copied text and to text recognised inside images before they are stored. It cannot recognise a secret that does not match a pattern, and it will occasionally hold back something harmless, such as a one-time code you wanted to keep. The settings screen says the same: detection is a safeguard, not a guarantee.

For anything you must never have in history, rely on the deterministic controls: an ignored app, pausing automatic capture before copying it. Avoid importing it manually, and do not depend only on a password manager marking its copies as concealed.

Removing what was saved

Delete clips from the Library; a multi-clip delete asks for confirmation, and Undo delete is available until you quit the app. Limit the number of clips and the automatic-deletion period are off by default and can be turned on in Settings, where favourites, pins, collections and snippets are kept. Export library writes a backup you control, and that export stays available even when a licence is inactive.
